Mount Vernon Parkway
Sidewalk and Traffic Calming

| |

The project limits begin at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Highway and continue south along Mt. Vernon Parkway to the intersection of Crest Valley Road. The project length is approximately 0.9 miles and calls for a five-foot sidewalk on the east side of Mt. Vernon Parkway. The goal is to improve pedestrian safety and reduce speeding traffic by narrowing the road. The design and engineering firm, Street Smarts, was selected in September 2003.At the first two community meetings residents expressed concern about storm water drainage problems on the street affecting properties. SSRI brought the issue to Fulton County's attention. The county agreed to fund drainage correction and secured funding from the Georgia Department of transportation for repaving of the street. As a result, StreetSmarts drafted new plans for the project moving the sidewalk to the east side of the street where drainage can be addressed at the same time as sidewalk construction. SSRI is coordinating all aspects of the project between Fulton County and GDOT. Construction is now anticipated to take place in 2005.
