River Valley Road

Neighborhood Improvement Project

Current Status of Project: Completed last Public Information Meeting in May 2004. Three public meetings were held in 2003/ 2004 to review plan proposals and allow residents a chance to give input. Preliminary Plans (preliminary design for construction documents) were submitted in June 2004 to GDOT for review.

Description of Project: The length of the project is approximately 1.27 miles. The project limits are as follows: along River Valley Road at the south side of its intersection with Johnson Ferry Road and extending southwest on River Valley Road to the intersection with Riverside Drive. The Proposed Typical Section includes 2-11' travel lanes and 2-4' bicycle lanes, one in each direction with new header curb on each side and a proposed 10-ft minimum shoulder with 5-ft sidewalk on both sides of the road with a 2 1/2 ft. grass strip.

Need and Purpose: The purpose of this project is to provide clean, functional, and aesthetically pleasing sidewalks for the residents and pedestrians along River Valley Road from Riverside Drive to Abernathy Park near Johnson's Ferry Road in Sandy Springs, Fulton County. A comprehensive network of sidewalks throughout the community will encourage more pedestrian travel and may reduce air pollution from motor vehicles. This project will also help decrease the high speeds of motor vehicles and improve the quality of life for the surrounding community and offer a means of personal physical fitness. The proposed sidewalks will provide connections to schools, shopping centers, residential neighborhoods, and other points of interest located in the River Valley Neighborhood District. The proposed bike lanes will be a part of the Fulton County bicycle path plan and will connect to other parts of the area.
