A key element of the Sandy Springs Revitalization Plan is neighborhood preservation. In 1997 Sandy Springs Revitalization, Inc. brought together businesses, residents, and public officials to create their vision for the Sandy Springs neighborhoods adjoining the business district in a community-wide neighborhood design charette.
The resulting Framework Plan featured their recommendations to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic circulation, and provide more open space for the area. The resulting Sandy Springs Framework Plan featured their recommendations to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic circulation, and defined streetscape standards for retrofitting these older neighborhoods with amenities such as sidewalks, bike paths, accessible transit, neighborhood identity features, parks and open space.
With funding from Fulton County and local management provided by SSRI, six neighborhood design projects identified in the Framework Plan are completed or in varying stages of design or construction, including: Whispering Pines, Mount Vernon Woods, The Branches, River Valley Road, Northwood Drive and Glenridge Hammond. By far, the greatest number of requests are for assistance with neighborhood sidewalks and traffic calming measures. |
